A cultural theme park opened in 2007 under orders of the then-Mayor of Davao City, Rodrigo Duterte The name chosen through a public vote, and “People’s Park” was proposed by Romeo Sardon, a retired electrician. It was created from the renovation of former sports grounds at a cost of P72 million, making it one of the most expensive public parks in the country.

The Durian Dome

The Durian Dome which servers as the main entrance to the park was modeled on the spiky durian fruit for which the region more generally is famous. Elements of the former sports ground have been retained—the shape of the running track was retained and is now a rainbow-colored promenade popular with joggers. Other features include tropical rainforest trees and large sculptures, including a giant statue of a Philippine Eagle.
